I am a Zillennial, born on the border between millennials and Gen Z. I remember dial-up internet, and I also make reels. I write emails with proper greetings, and I also reply to messages with a single emoji.
Being in between has given me a strange gift. I can see both sets of rules clearly, and I get to choose which ones I keep.
The millennial rules I was handed
Work hard, stay loyal, build a stable career. Be grateful for every opportunity. Don’t rock the boat.
The Gen Z rules I see around me
Protect your peace. Leave places that don’t respect you. Your mental health matters more than your job title. Say what you mean.
Where I land
Honestly? Somewhere in the middle, and I think that is the beauty of it.
I believe in hard work, but not at the cost of myself. Effort matters. So does sleep.
I believe in loyalty, but it has to go both ways. I will show up for people who show up for me.
I believe in boundaries, but also in patience. Not every uncomfortable moment is a red flag. Some things are just growth.
I believe in being honest, but also kind. Directness doesn’t have to mean harshness.
Why the in-between is powerful
When you sit between two generations, you become a translator. You can explain Gen Z’s boundaries to an older boss and explain a senior’s experience to a younger colleague. In families, in offices and in friendships, that ability to bridge is rare and valuable.
So if you also feel caught in between, too old for some trends and too young for some expectations, I want you to know it is not a confusion. It is a vantage point.
You get to take the best of both and write your own rules.
That is a beautiful place to stand.
