I have been independent and self-made since 2021. Somewhere along the way, I picked up a strange habit. Every time I rest, I feel like I am stealing time from my own life. If you have built something from nothing, you might know this rest guilt too.
Why rest feels like guilt
When nobody handed you anything, every hour feels like it has to be earned. You remember the days when one missed opportunity could have meant everything. So even when things are stable, your body keeps acting like it is still in survival mode.
Hustle becomes your identity
After a while, being busy is not just what you do. It becomes who you are. And when you stop, even for a weekend, you do not quite know who you are without the noise.
What I am slowly learning
Rest is part of the work, not a break from it. Your best ideas rarely arrive at your desk. They show up in the shower, on a walk, at 7 am with a cup of tea.
A tired mind makes expensive decisions. I have made worse calls when I was exhausted than when I was rested. Rest is a business strategy, not a luxury.
Nobody is giving out medals for burnout. The people who love you would rather have you healthy than impressive.
You are allowed to enjoy what you built. This is the part I struggle with most. What is the point of building a life if you never stop long enough to live in it?
Small ways I am practising
One evening a week with no laptop. Lunch away from my desk. Saying “I will reply tomorrow” without apologising for it.
It still feels uncomfortable sometimes. The guilt has not disappeared. But I am learning to notice it, sit with it and rest anyway.
Because I did not build all this to run away from my own life. I built it so I could finally have one.
